How Much CBD Should I Take?

CBD is currently unregulated. Even with all the hype, CBD has not been extensively studied. No dosing standards exist and, if you Google it, recommended intake for CBD is all over the board. The short answer (and the answer we advise) is: Consult your doctor to get the CBD dose that is right for you. Even with that said, what many find is that even physicians are unclear and inconsistent when it comes to knowledge about CBD, various ways it’s administered, and what dose to take. CBD is not a prescription (with one exception for a rare form of epilepsy) and often loosely categorized as a dietary supplement.

WHAT IS CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring compound from the cannabis plant most often associated with a feeling of relaxation and calm. CBD is one of the primary cannabis compounds that has similar medicinal benefits as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), but does not give consumers the feeling of being “high”. In short, pure CBD retains the health benefits while eliminating the psychoactive “high” effect.

WHY ALL THE HYPE LATELY?

CBD (hemp based, with less than 0.3% THC) was decriminalized at the federal level by the Farm Bill in 2018 and it is currently legal to grow, sell, buy, and consume hemp-based CBD products in all 50 states. By differentiating the “high” part of cannabis (THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis) and legalizing the “health” part of cannabis (CBD), CBD has come out of the shadows and is showing up on health store shelves everywhere. Interest is high, personal testimonials are strong, and early research is promising. All of this fuels the fire of interest in a growing population of people who are hungry for a natural alternative for many of the things CBD is being said by many to improve, most notably:

  • stress and anxiety*
  • improved sleep*
  • chronic pain management*

WHY DO RECOMMENDATIONS VARY SO MUCH?

There are many factors that affect proper dosage. Body size, CBD tolerance, product sensitivity, CBD bioavailability... just to name a few. In an unregulated marketplace, CBD product labels are often confusing, inaccurate, and hard for consumers to verify. Additionally, CBD is absorbed at different rates depending upon the form you choose to get CBD into your body. Oils, vape, edibles, tinctures, and water-soluble CBD teas are all absorbed at a different rate. Dosage may vary based upon the mechanism/vehicle you choose to get CBD into your body.

SO, WHAT IS THE PROPER DOSE?

The short answer is, “it depends”. As a rule, starting with less is more. If you are new to CBD, start with the CBD OolaTea 28-Day Protocol to get the best results. Dr. Dave and Dr. Troy, retired natural healthcare providers and co-founders of OolaTea, designed the CBD OolaTea 28-Day Protocol for their water-soluble CBD tea to ensure that your body's Endocanebanoid System (ECS) has ample time to become activated and bring your body into homeostasis. This is when you get maximum benefits and start to optimize health. They are advocates of water-soluble CBD tea for three major reasons:

  1. It's easy to measure a precise dose (10 mg per tea serving).
  2. Tea has numerous health benefits of its own (antioxidants, flavonoids, etc).
  3. The process to make CBD water-soluble also makes CBD tasteless and odorless (“muddy/barn-like” taste and funky smell are two of the primary complaints from those who use CBD tinctures and oils).

OVERVIEW OF THE CBD OOLATEA 28-DAY PROTOCOL

Step 1 - The Loading Phase: Take 20mg of CBD per day for the first 7 days. Each CBD OolaTea conveniently contains 10mg of water-soluble CBD. One CBD tea in the morning and one in the evening will provide the 20mg recommended dosage in the loading phase. Alternatively, you can add CBD Honey Pearls as a natural sweetener to your tea (or any food or beverage you choose). The goal is to get to 20mg of CBD per day for the first 7 days.

Step 2 - The Building Phase: For the next 21 days, take 10mg of water-soluble CBD per day. One CBD tea contains 10mg of water-soluble CBD. Alternatively, you can add one packet of CBD Honey Pearls (contains 10mg of water-soluble CBD) as a natural sweetener to any food or beverage you choose. The goal is to get to 10mg/day for the next 21 days.

Step 3 - Evaluate: After the 28-day protocol, you decide if CBD tea is a good fit for you. Adjust your dosage based upon response to the trial and desired effect. This will be your Daily Maintenance Phase.

What we have found is that most daily users find between 10-20mg is enough to meet their health goals. As regulations and standards play catch-up with the marketplace, it is our hope that there will be more universally accepted standards for this natural product that holds so much promise. Stay tuned on this blog. As we learn more, we’ll continue to share.
