CBD is currently unregulated. Even with all the hype, CBD has not been extensively studied. No dosing standards exist and, if you Google it, recommended intake for CBD is all over the board. The short answer (and the answer we advise) is: Consult your doctor to get the CBD dose that is right for you. Even with that said, what many find is that even physicians are unclear and inconsistent when it comes to knowledge about CBD, various ways it’s administered, and what dose to take. CBD is not a prescription (with one exception for a rare form of epilepsy) and often loosely categorized as a dietary supplement.
WHAT IS CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring compound from the cannabis plant most often associated with a feeling of relaxation and calm. CBD is one of the primary cannabis compounds that has similar medicinal benefits as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), but does not give consumers the feeling of being “high”. In short, pure CBD retains the health benefits while eliminating the psychoactive “high” effect.
WHY ALL THE HYPE LATELY?
CBD (hemp based, with less than 0.3% THC) was decriminalized at the federal level by the Farm Bill in 2018 and it is currently legal to grow, sell, buy, and consume hemp-based CBD products in all 50 states. By differentiating the “high” part of cannabis (THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis) and legalizing the “health” part of cannabis (CBD), CBD has come out of the shadows and is showing up on health store shelves everywhere. Interest is high, personal testimonials are strong, and early research is promising. All of this fuels the fire of interest in a growing population of people who are hungry for a natural alternative for many of the things CBD is being said by many to improve, most notably:
- stress and anxiety*
- improved sleep*
- chronic pain management*
WHY DO RECOMMENDATIONS VARY SO MUCH?
There are many factors that affect proper dosage. Body size, CBD tolerance, product sensitivity, CBD bioavailability... just to name a few. In an unregulated marketplace, CBD product labels are often confusing, inaccurate, and hard for consumers to verify. Additionally, CBD is absorbed at different rates depending upon the form you choose to get CBD into your body. Oils, vape, edibles, tinctures, and water-soluble CBD teas are all absorbed at a different rate. Dosage may vary based upon the mechanism/vehicle you choose to get CBD into your body.
SO, WHAT IS THE PROPER DOSE?
